Restoring the Brig. Gen. James Nagle Monument - 48th Pa
John David Hoptak, Civil War historian and Park Ranger at Antietam National Battlefield, is leading a fundraiser to restore the 48th Pennsylvania Monument at Antietam by replacing the sword missing from the statue of Brigadier General James Nagle. Hoptak has partnered with the Western Maryland Interpretive Association, the non-profit (501-C3) partner of the Antietam battlefield, and is working in cooperation with the Antietam National Battlefield in this endeavor. Hoptak has secured the services of artist Michael Kraus who will scuplt the bronze sword. The fundraising goal is $6,800.00, based upon the estimate of Mr. Kraus.

Individuals or organizations wishing to donate can do so by sending a check or money order made out to "Western Maryland Interpretive Association", or by making a donation on-line. All donations will be matched on a one-to-one basis. Please write "Nagle Sword" on your check's subject line. For more information, click on the link below.
